OBSERVABLE UNIVERSE LOGARITHMIC ILLUSTRATION

This artistic, data-based representation of the Observable Universe was developed and published by Pablo in 2012 and has undergone various updates until 2026. It is a circular diagram that shows in detail astronomical objects of various distances and sizes thanks to the use of a logarithmic scale.
Many things are commented on this image, most people say it’s the eye of the universe looking back at us…
The solar system is located in the center. Towards the edges, the scale is progressively reduced to show in detail the most distant and biggest structures of the observable universe sphere.
In 2016 this work went viral among astronomy fans. It was featured in several science museums and publications, including NASA apod 2018 and 2022, Dumont World Atlas, Sciences et Avenir magazine, and the Encircling the World exhibition at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. In 2020, this work was used as the face of a coin of the Republic of Palau (island country in the western Pacific Ocean). The We The Curious Museum, Bristol, UK currently exhibits a dome with this image on the ceiling of its astronomy area. Other museums that have featured versions of this image include wndr Museum and the Adler Planetarium in Chicago.
Selected to integrate the contents of the lunar time capsule “Sanctuary, Eternity for Mankind” and sent to Proxima Centauri b in an Active SETI message by the UK radio show Fun Kids and the SpaceSpeak site.

Many things are commented on this image. Most people say it’s the eye of the universe looking back at us, making us feel small and humble, or maybe making us feel great and lucky. Lucky to be able to stare at the cosmic beauty. With a bone-deep certainty that in all this diversity we cannot be the only ones!

Each section comes with specific data about the objects, including distances, sizes, and cool facts. It is an excellent educational tool, as information-dense as it can be, with a carefully chosen summary of everything we can observe.
